Zographion Lycée

The Zographion High School and Lycée is one of the few educational institutions of Greek minority in Istanbul. The school is in the center of Istanbul in a small distance from Beyoglu (Pera).

The history of the Zographion school starts in the 19th century, when there were needs for educational accommodation and the Zappion school was not able to cover these needs. Also the school that functioned in the Crossroad of Virgin Mary (Taksim) had more than 800 students and thus it was decided to collect money to build a new and modern educational institution. There many who offered money for this work, with leading the residing in Paris Hristaki Zographos, which had given more than 10,000 golden liras of that period. In 1890 the general assembly of the community decided to name the school Zographion in honor of him. In the architectural competition, the proposal of architect Pericles Fotiadis predominated and thus the school was build precisely as it is today. In 1899 Zographion gave his first graduates.

In the first years, the school experienced a real blossoming with more that 250 students. Specifically before the Pogrom of 1955 and also before the deportations of 1964, the students only in this school were above 350. Today the potential of the school is not more than 45 students and 20 teachers.

Το Ζωγράφειο Γυμνάσιο - Λύκειο είναι ένα από τα λίγα Ελληνικά εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα που λειτουργούν στην Πόλη. Το σχολείο βρίσκεται στο κέντρο της Πόλης σε μικρή απόσταση από το Πέρα.

Η ιστορία του Ζωγραφείου σχολείου ανάγεται στον 19ο αιώνα, όταν υπήρξαν ανάγκες για εκπαιδευτική στέγαση μιας και το Ζάππειο από μόνο του δεν μπορούσε να καλύψει αυτές τις ανάγκες. Επίσης η σχολή που λειτουργούσε στο Σταυροδρόμι της Παναγίας είχε πάνω από 800 μαθητές και έτσι αποφασίστηκε να γίνει ενας έρανος για να χτιστεί ενα καινούργιο και σύγχρονο εκπαιδευτικό ίδρυμα. Έτσι πολλοί ήταν εκείνοι που πρόσφεραν για το έργο αυτό, με κορυφαίο τον διαμένοντα στο Παρίσι Χρηστάκη Ζωγράφο, ο οποίος είχε δώσει πάνω από 10.000 χρυσές λίρες της εποχής. Το 1890 η γενική συνέλευση της κοινότητας αποφάσισε σε ένδειξη τιμής να ονομαστεί το σχολείο Ζωγράφειο. Στον αρχιτεκτονικό διαγωνισμό υπερίσχυσε η πρόταση του αρχιτέκτονα Περικλή Φωτιάδη και έτσι πραγματοποιήθηκε το χτίσιμο του σχολείου έτσι ακριβώς όπως είναι σήμερα. Το 1899 το Ζωγράφειο έδωσε τους πρώτους αποφοίτους του.

Τα προηγούμενα χρόνια το σχολείο είχε μια πραγματική άνθηση και πάντα πάνω από 250 μαθητές. Ειδικά δε πριν τα Σεπτεμβριανά του 1955 αλλά και πριν τις απελάσεις (1964) οι μαθητές μόνο στο σχολείο αυτό ήταν πάνω από 350. Σήμερα το δυναμικό της σχολής δεν είναι περισσότεροι από 45 μαθητές και 20 εκπαιδευτικούς.

Zoğrafyon Ortaokulu ve Lisesi İstanbul'da faaliyet gösteren az sayıda kalmış Rum eğitim kurumlarından biridir. Okul İstanbul'un merkezinde Beyoğlu'na çok yakın bir konumdadır.

Zoğrafyon okulunun tarihi, Zapyon okulunun ihtiyacı karşılayamadığı ve yeni bir eğitim çatısına gereksinim duyulan 19uncu yüzyıla dayanır. Taksim'deki Panagia okulunun da 800'den fazla öğrenciye sahip olması sonucu, yeni ve çağdaş bir eğitim kurumunun inşası için para toplanmasına karar verilir. Bu iş için, başta Paris'te yaşayan ve zamanın 10.000 altın lirasını bağışlayan Hristaki Zoğrafos olmak üzere, birçok kişi bağışta bulunur. Cemiyetin 1890'daki genel toplantısında, bir onur göstergesi olarak, okulun adının Zoğrafyon olmasına karar verilir. Mimari yarışmada, mimar Periklis Fotiadis'in önerisi üstün gelir ve bugünkü haliyle okulunun inşası gerçekleşir. 1899 yılında Zoğrafyon ilk mezunlarını verir.

İlk zamanlarda okulda gerçek bir gelişme olur ve 250'den fazla öğrencisi olur. Özellikle, 1955'teki 6/7 Eylül olaylarından ve 1964'teki Yunan kökenlilerin sınırdışı edilmesinden önce bu okulda eğitim gören öğrencilerin sayısı 350'yi geçer. Günümüzde ise okulun bünyesinde 45'ten az öğrenci ve 20'yi bulmayan öğretmen bulunmaktadır.
