Our Trip to Gallipoli Battle Fields
on 9-10 April 2005 (page 4)

Then leaving back the place we reached our car that we had parked quite far away from the croud and busses and we headed towards the great monument of the Peninsula the so called Abide which means actually "monument"... but it was not possible to reach the monument because there was so much crowd... so we turned back and tried to go to the Anzak cove at the west shores of the Peninsula near our hotel... however the road to ANZAC cove was closed due to construction and laying of asphalt... so we headed up the hills towards the Chunuk Bair... this is a hill top where Turkish army was holding during the war and very fierce battles were held with the ANZAC's... here is a photo of ANZAK Cove from the hills :

On our way up we pased from the Lone Pine Cemetery... here are a few photos of the cemetery with a grave stone of someone from Cristchurch (I think Rod is living there)... and a photo of Kabatepe harbour which was the right wing of the ANZAK cove, and near our hotel :

Very close to the Lone Pine cemetery was the Turkish 57th Regiment cemetery which was also very crowded...

A little up at the top of the hill were the "Chunuk Bair" or Conk Bayiri in Turkish... we stoped here and visited the big stone inscriptions and took photos of them and the ANZAK cove down the hills... after that we decided to left our visit of the rest of the hill for the next day... here are photos of the inscriptions... (I was goingto stich the four photos of the inscriptions into one but couldn't find time)

And here are some photos dawn the Chunuk Bair at the ANZAK cove.. this was the leftmost part of the ANZAK landing area, the Suvla bay you can see here also the small salt lake in the distance... (I was goingto stich those photos into one but couldn't find time)

Then we called it a day and went to the other side of the peninsula at the Dardanelles straits (Canakkale Bogazi)... we went up to Kilitbahir village... Kilitbahir castle resides here which was used to block the straits... it was here that the allies decided to stop trying to cross the straits and get out at the shore for land battle... here is the narrower part of the straits... we had some coffee there...
